According to All Things Digital, Apple is set to buy Quattro Wireless, another mobile ad platform similar to AdMob. This deal seems very logical since Apple tried to acquire AdMob but Google paid more, at $750 million. Instead Apple went to the second largest mobile ad network, Quattro, with a $275 million proposal.
Was it a good deal for Quattro or for Apple?
John Furrier, CEO of SilliconAngle, said that Apple was able to get a good bargain on Quattro due to lack of confidence in Quattro’s management team. It also seems that Quattro is also getting a “bargain” because it is advantageous for them to sell at this time. Another Win-Win deal in my opinion.
In December 2009, Quattro Wireless and DM2PRO researched the state of the mobile industry. Do you remember our discussion about trends in 2010? The mobile industry is one of the technology trends that will continue to explode in 2010, as can be seen in the last few months: almost $1 billion was invested in mobile ad business.
It makes perfect sense for Apple to get in the mobile advertisements business given the tremendous success/buzz they had with their mobile devices such as the iPod Touch and iPhone. Their timing seems excellent with the expected tablet announcements later this month. I expect a lot of potential for Apple in this pursuit of Quattro Wireless.

Do you think there will be regulatory concerns? After all, the FTC is re-reviewing Google-Admob. How is this different? It just seems reasonable that Admob’s biggest comp would be purchased by Google’s biggest comp. It also seems counter intuitive to any monopoly claim…now MS will go after Millennial. In other words…plenty of ad networks = lot’s of competition- Your thoughts.
Desmond,
I agree with you. I really don’t think that the mobile ad market has any monopoly at all. Google explained that in good details. http://bit.ly/4wmBR9
I think that with Apple acquiring Quattro Wireless, FTC should have a clearer view of the competition. This may initially be good for Google since there is a high chance their deal will pass through.
Thanks,
